There are places in Africa that stay with you long after you’ve left. The Free State and Eastern Cape are like that — wide, quiet, and alive in ways that are hard to put into words. Boschendal Safari sits right in the heart of it, and we’ve built something here worth coming a long way for.

Our main farm lies in the Rouxville District of the Free State, just outside Aliwal North on the Goedemoed road — a stretch of country where the highveld begins to break into the deeper, more dramatic landscapes of the Eastern Cape escarpment. We also operate Elandsnek, our Eastern Cape farm, which adds a completely different terrain and an even wider range of species to the Boschendal experience.

Two Farms, One Unforgettable Safari

What makes Boschendal Safari exceptional is the variety. Most hunting operations offer you one type of country. We offer two — each with its own character, its own challenges, and its own rewards.

The Free State farm delivers classic open-country hunting: long sight lines, careful stalking, and the particular satisfaction of reading ground that seems flat but conceals every animal perfectly. The Eastern Cape farm at Elandsnek is altogether different — broken kloofs, dense riverine bush, and terrain that demands patience and fieldcraft.

The Species at Boschendal Safari

Between the two farms, we offer a full and varied trophy list that covers the best of Southern African plains game hunting:

Eland — the largest antelope on earth, a true trophy that tests both the hunter and the shot. Kudu — the grey ghost of the bushveld, a bull kudu in this country is an animal worth every hour of glassing. Blue Wildebeest and Red Hartebeest provide exciting, fast-moving hunts across open ground. Zebra offers a striking trophy and a challenging shot on an animal with exceptional senses.

Impala, Springbuck, and Blesbuck are the backbone of any plains game package — beautiful animals that offer excellent shooting and superb table fare. Mountain Reedbuck haunt the rocky kloofs and hillsides, presenting one of the more technically demanding stalks on the property. Warthog keeps things lively with fast, instinctive shooting. And for something unusual, we also offer Lechwe, Waterbuck, and Ostrich — species that add genuine variety to any safari itinerary.

The Country Around Aliwal North

Aliwal North is one of those small South African towns that punches above its weight for hunters. The surrounding district sits at the convergence of the Free State grasslands and the Eastern Cape’s valley bushveld, which means the biodiversity is exceptional. The area is malaria-free, comfortably accessible by road from major centres, and offers the kind of wide-open space that city life makes you forget exists.

The light changes here in ways that make photographers and hunters equally happy — golden mornings that stretch out across the flats, afternoon storms that clear into copper sunsets, and nights that remind you how dark the sky can really get.
